Form 4868

IRS Form 4868 (2024) is used to request an automatic extension of time to file a U.S. individual income tax return (including Forms 1040, 1040-SR, 1040-NR, and 1040-SS). The filer enters name, address, SSN/ITIN (and spouse SSN if applicable), estimates total 2024 tax liability and payments, calculates any balance due, and may include an extension payment. It provides checkboxes for taxpayers out of the country and certain 1040-NR filers, plus instructions for paying electronically or by check and where to mail the paper form. For most calendar-year taxpayers, it must be filed by April 15, 2025.

U.S. individual taxpayers (including certain nonresident filers) who need an automatic extension of time to file their federal income tax return for tax year 2024, or their authorized tax professional.

Submit electronically via IRS e-file/tax software, or mail the completed paper Form 4868 to the IRS address listed for your state (different addresses apply depending on whether a payment is included). If you pay electronically and designate the payment as an extension, you generally do not need to file Form 4868.
