IRS Form W-7 (Rev. 12-2024) is an application to obtain or renew an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) for U.S. federal tax purposes. Applicants choose whether they are applying for a new ITIN or renewing, and select the reason for applying (such as filing a U.S. tax return, being a dependent/spouse, claiming a treaty benefit, or holding a visa). The form requests name details (including name at birth), mailing and foreign addresses, birth information, gender, citizenship, foreign tax ID, U.S. visa information, identification documents submitted, U.S. entry date, and any prior ITIN/IRSN. The applicant must sign and date under penalties of perjury; an acceptance agent section is included.
Individuals who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents and who need an IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) and are not eligible for a U.S. Social Security number (SSN).
Submit to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as instructed on IRS.gov/FormW7 (often with required identification documentation and, when applicable, a U.S. federal tax return unless an exception applies).
