Form 4506-T: How to request your IRS tax transcript
What is Form 4506-T used for?
Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return, lets you ask the IRS for a summary of your previously filed tax information. It is not a copy of your actual return. Instead, it pulls key data the IRS already holds.
People use it to verify income for mortgages, student aid, or loans, to confirm past filings, and to prove they did not file in a given year. Lenders, government agencies, and tax professionals accept these transcripts as official IRS-verified records.
Why would a lender need Form 4506-T?
During a mortgage or loan application, lenders pull your tax data straight from the IRS rather than trusting the documents you hand over. Signing the form authorizes that release. Federal law treats tax returns as confidential, so your written authorization is what allows a third party to receive the information.
The Small Business Administration also requires the form for disaster loan applications, even if you were not required to file a return that year.
What transcripts can you request?
Form 4506-T covers several transcript types, so you choose the one that matches what you or the requesting party needs to see. The IRS provides all of these at no charge.
- Tax return transcript: Cost line items from your original 1040-series return as filed, available for the current and prior three years. This usually satisfies mortgage lenders.
- Tax account transcript: Basic data like filing status and taxable income, plus any changes made after you filed.
- Record of account transcript: Combines the return and account transcripts into one detailed document.
- Wage and income transcript: Data from W-2s, 1099s, and 1098s that the IRS received.
- Verification of non-filing letter: Confirms the IRS has no record of a processed return for the year.
What is the difference between Form 4506 and Form 4506-T?
These two forms sound alike but serve different purposes. Form 4506-T gives you a free transcript, which is a summary of your return data. Form 4506 orders an actual photocopy of your filed return and charges a fee.
For most income verification and lending needs, the transcript is the faster, cheaper choice. Reach for Form 4506 only when a full photocopy of the original return is specifically required.
How long does it take to get Form 4506-T processed?
The IRS processes most transcript requests within 10 business days of receiving the form. Timing can vary during busy filing periods or if your information does not match IRS records exactly.
To avoid delays, complete every applicable line and make sure your name, Social Security number, and address match your most recent filing. The IRS rejects incomplete or unsigned forms without processing them, and it must receive the signed form within 120 days of the signature date.
How do you fill out Form 4506-T correctly?
Accuracy matters, because mismatched details are a leading reason requests get rejected. Work through the form line by line and check each entry against your filed return before signing.
- Line 1a and 1b: Enter the name and SSN or ITIN shown on the return. For a joint return, list the name that appeared first. For a business return, use the EIN.
- Line 3: Enter your current address, including any P.O. box.
- Line 4: Enter your previous address if it differs from the one on your last return.
- Line 6: Enter the form number, usually 1040, and check the box for the transcript type you need.
- Line 9: Enter the ending date of each year requested in MM/DD/YYYY format, such as 12/31/2024.
You can request up to four years on a single form. For more than four, attach another Form 4506-T.
Can you fill out Form 4506-T online?
You can complete the form digitally before printing, but the IRS does not accept it through an online portal. Once filled in and signed, you mail or fax it to the address listed for the state where you lived when the return was filed. If you only need your own records, the IRS Individual Online Account often delivers transcripts instantly, which can save you from filing the form at all.
